Dear 5th Grade Students and Families,
I am Mrs. Wesson, Shoesmith’s 5th Grade Literacy teacher. I am excited to start the 2020-21 school year with you! I would like to tell you a few things about myself.
The 2020-21 school year will be my 6th year at Shoesmith School. Prior to Shoesmith, I spent the nine years teaching in Eau Claire, MI. I have a real passion for teaching reading and writing to students of all ages!
When not at school, I enjoy reading books, cooking, and family time. I spend as much quality time as possible with my husband and our two children, Stella and Briggs. We love to go for long walks throughout the city. We also love to travel back to Michigan and Ohio to visit our relatives as much as possible.
I look forward to getting to know more about you and your family this school year!
The following information will be helpful to ensure the school year runs smoothly:
Homework and Planners
- Students will be assigned homework on a daily basis. Homework assignments should be written in student planners
- Please be sure to check your child’s planner and homework.
- Homework is a very important part of the learning process. It is imperative that students turn in completed homework ON TIME. Homework assignments are an extension of skills covered in class that day.
- Students may request homework help. This help will usually be provided before or after school. If a student is struggling with the assignment, he/she should first try to complete the work as best to his/her ability. This will help me to see how the student is thinking and how to best help.
- We will engage in many great novel studies and activities that will challenge your student to be creative in demonstrating an understanding of skills and concepts covered through the school year.
- Feel free to visit the Common Core Standards website to see which areas we will be focusing on in Fifth Grade! http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/RL5/L
- Shoesmith is a uniform school. Each student is required to wear a uniform Monday through Friday
- Proper uniform attire consists of a gold, white, or black collared shirt and khaki slacks with a belt.
- Students are required to wear their gym uniform for gym class. Students should wear their gym uniform under their school uniform, as there will not be enough time to change clothes between classes.
- Should your child be absent from school, please send a note detailing the reason for the absence.
- Upon return from an absence, it is your child’s responsibility to get the missing assignments from his/her mailbox and arrange to meet with me before or after school to get an explanation of the missing assignments.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Wesson
